Addressing A Pressing Challenge For Doctors, Nurses & Patients
"We kept hearing about the same problems and concerns from neurosurgeons, critical care physicians, and their nurses."
Our team - current and former colleagues from academia as well as the medical device sector - created the Smart External Drain to aid treatment for those suffering from a brain condition or injury where internal bleeding or pressure build-up occurs.
Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) can be a result of acute hydrocephalus or other acute conditions such as traumatic brain injury, tumors, and infections. Under these circumstances, neurosurgeons will often place an external Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) drain to prevent secondary brain injury or death. Maintenance of the current systems used is cumbersome as any shift of the patient’s position requires a trained nurse to manually readjust the device level.
The Smart External Drain Solution
The Smart External Drain (SED) is designed to eliminate the need for constant manual measurements, adjustments and interventions. The product can enhance patient mobility allowing the patient undergoing tests and physical therapy to continue draining. The SED may potentially improve patient safety providing patient specific settings for control and alarms for unwanted conditions.
The SED received its most recent 510(k) clearance in November 2017. We have multiple patents. Our first U.S. patent (No. 9,662,478) was granted in May 2017.
